On Thursday, April 24, sixty-five students from eight Itasca Area Schools Collaborative (IASC) high schools participated in the Minnesota North College Healthcare Pathway Day event coordinated by Minnesota North College, True North Stars Perkins Consortium and IASC NEXT Career Pathways.
Students from Bigfork, Deer River, Grand Rapids, Grand Rapids Area Learning Center, Greenway, Hill City, Nashwauk-Keewatin and Northland Community Schools, were welcomed by Alicia Alleman and Bill Marshall from Minnesota North College and Scott Patrow from IASC NEXT Career Pathways. Four sessions engaged students in Healthcare Pathway activities including learning about MN North College healthcare programs; hearing from a student panel made up of recent MN North College healthcare graduates; participating in hands-on activities in the newly remodeled MN North College nursing lab; and, interacting with area business organizations to hear about job and career opportunities within their organizations.
Business partners in attendance were: Bigfork Valley Hospital, Essentia Health, Grand Itasca Clinic and Hospital, Grand Rapids Area Dental Collaboration including Northwest Technical Center, Itasca County Public Health, Minnesota North College, Oak Hill Assisted Living, Scenic Rivers Dental and Scenic Rivers Health.
Career-connected activities such as this are an important part of building a strong healthcare career workforce for the future. Thanks to all participating businesses and teachers who committed to providing this valuable experience for students in the IASC NEXT Healthcare Career Pathway.

Spartan Angling made a big splash today on the Rainy River for their big spring outing. All of the participants had never caught a sturgeon and I looked to a trusted guide Cody Christensen of Full Throttle Guiding to put us on the mark. https://www.rainylakefishguiding.com There were screams, sore arms, tense netting moments, and flat out fun! Fish boated lengths in the 40’s, 50’s and an epic 68.5 inch mark! Every kid boated at least 2 fish shattering personal bests for longest fish ever caught and first sturgeon catches. Epic day, kids won’t forget! Great day to be a Spartan! Did you sign up for Spartan Angling next year?

Attached are recent photos from our April 23 session with Sgt. Joe Martire and Liz Sundeen from the Minnesota Department of Corrections.
Students have also learned from guest presenters in healthcare fields, natural resources, apprenticeships and trades, and law enforcement. We appreciate all guest speakers' time, knowledge, and enthusiasm that they bring to the classroom.

4th graders in Mrs. Johnson's class played a competitive game of Math Jeopardy! The game included concept review and concept challenges. Students had to work together in teams to earn as many points as they could before reaching the Final Jeopardy question. They then had to choose what they were going to "wager" in true Jeopardy fashion.
